第四回
SCENE II.
France. Before Orleans
[Sound a Flourish（繁盛する）. Enter Charles, Alencon, and Reignier,
marching with Drum and Soldiers.]
がやがや音、チャールズ、アランソン、レニエがドラムと兵士とともに登場
CHARLES.
Mars his true moving, even as in the heavens
So in the earth, to this day is not known:
マルス、天空の火星マーズも地上の軍神マルスも、その本当のムーブマンはこんにちにおいてもわからない
Late did he shine upon the English side;
Now we are victors; upon us he smiles.
最近までそれらはイングランドに輝いていた、けどいまではワレワレは勝者として彼らのスマイルを受けている
What towns of any moment（好機、重要性） but we have?
重要な都市でワレワレの手に無いものはあるか？
At pleasure here we lie near Orleans;
Otherwhiles the famish'd English, like pale ghosts,
Faintly besiege us one hour in a month.
オルレアンはワレワレの意のママであり、あるいは、飢餓に面したイングランド軍が、青白い幽霊のようによわよわしく一ヶ月に一時間ほど攻め寄せてくるだけではないか。
ALENCON.
They want their porridge（おかゆ） and their fat bull beeves（beefの複数形）
ヤツラはポリッジと太った牛の肉を求めています
Either they must be dieted like mules,
And have their provender（まぐさ） tied to their mouths,
Or piteous they will look, like drowned mice.
まるでミュールにするようにまぐさを口にくくりつけておかないと、かれらは溺れたネズミみたいに悲惨な有り様なんですよ
REIGNIER.
Let's raise the siege: why live we idly here?
さぁ包囲を破りましょう、どうしてここでグズグズしていましょうか
Talbot is taken, whom we wont(~してきた） to fear:
Weが恐れるのを常としてきたタルボットは捕虜にしたのですし
Remaineth none but mad-brain'd Salisbury;
残ったのは頭のイカレタサリスベリーだけ
And he may well in fretting（やきもきする） spend his gall（重苦しいもの、イヤなもの）,
Nor men nor money hath he to make war.
そしてHEもただやきもきして、うんざりしてるだけでしょう、戦うにも兵隊もカネもないんだから
CHARLES.
Sound, sound alarum!（ドタバタ音 演劇用語） we will rush on them.
うなれうなれ轟音よ！ ヤツラに突撃するぞ
Now for the honour of the forlorn（哀れな） French!
悲運のフランスの名誉回復の為に
Him I forgive my death that killeth me
When he sees me go back one foot or flee.
一歩でも引いたIを見たらIを殺してもかまわない！
[Exeunt.]
Here alarum; they are beaten back by the English, with
great loss. Re-enter Charles, Alencon, and Reignier.
立ち回りのシーン、フランス軍はイングランド軍に大敗して戻ってくる。チャールズ、アランソン、レニエがまた登場
CHARLES.
Who ever saw the like? what men have I!
こんなヤツラを見たことがあるか！Iが子飼いにしてる！
Dogs! cowards! dastards! I would ne'er have fled,
負け犬、チキン野郎、クソがぁ！
But that they left me 'midst my enemies.
Iは逃げたりはしなかったぞ、だが、ヤツラがIを敵の真ん中に置き去りにしたんだ
REIGNIER.
Salisbury is a desperate homicide;
He fighteth as one weary（うんざりする） of his life.
サリスベリーはもう鬼気迫る殺し屋です、Heはもう人生にまったくうんざりしたように戦っています
The other lords, like lions wanting food,
Do rush upon us as their hungry prey.
他のロードたちも。ライオンが餌を求めるように、ワレワレに飛びかかってきます
ALENCON.
Froissart, a countryman（同国民） of ours, records,
England all Olivers（オリヴィエ） and Rowlands（ローラン オリヴィエとローランはフランスの古典、ローランの歌の主人公の騎士） bred
During the time Edward the Third did reign.
フロアサールというワレワレの同士が書いた記録によるとイングランドがエドワードⅢによって支配されていた時代（１３２７～１３７７）は（ローランの歌にでてくる）オリヴィエやらローランのような（勇猛な騎士）しか生まれなかったといいます
More truly now may this be verified;
For none but Samsons and Goliases（サムソン、ゴライアスは旧約聖書の勇将、特にゴライアスは巨人という噂。サムスン、サムソンは長い髪は力の象徴というユダヤ人のヒーロー）
It sendeth forth to skirmish（小競り合い）.
それが事実だとより判明したというものです、サムソンやゴライアスのような（巨漢）ばかりが小競り合いに出てくるのだから
One to ten!
Lean raw-bon'd rascals（やくざ者）! who would e'er suppose
They had such courage and audacity（大胆さ）?
１対１０だっていうのに！ やせ細って、骨ばかりのやくざ者が！どうしてこんなに勇気と大胆さをもっていたと想定できたか
CHARLES.
Let's leave this town; for they are hare（仔ウサギ）-brain'd slaves,
And hunger will enforce them to be more eager:
この都市を離れよう、ヤツラは仔ウサギ程度の脳みそしかない奴隷なんだ、飢餓になればなるほど、必死になる
Of old I know them; rather with their teeth
The walls they'll tear down than forsake the siege.
前からわかっていたことだ、この包囲を解くくらいなら、ヤツラは歯で城壁をかみきってでもここを陥とすつもりだ
REIGNIER.
I think by some odd gimmors（ジンバル、宇宙ゴマのこと） or device
Their arms are set like clocks, still to strike on;
たぶんジンバルかなんかの工夫によって、腕に時計のようにネジを巻いてるんですよう、だからずっと打ち続けることができるんだ
Else ne'er could they hold out so as they do.
By my consent, we'll even let them alone.
でなければそうそうもちこたえられるはずがない、Iの意見でもヤツラはほっておくに限ります
ALENCON.
Be it so.

[Enter the Bastard of Orleans.]
BASTARD.
Where's the Prince Dauphin? I have news for him.
DAはどこか、Heに知らせがある
CHARLES.
Bastard of Orleans, thrice（三倍の） welcome to us.
オルレアンの私生子よ、三倍の歓迎を示そう
BASTARD.
Methinks your looks are sad, your cheer appall'd（ぎょっとさせる）:
Hath the late overthrow wrought（workの過去形） this offence?
思うに悲しそうですね、元気が無い。今の攻撃でお疲れになりましたかね
Be not dismay'd, for succour（援軍） is at hand:
心配なさるな、援軍はまもなくです
A holy maid hither with me I bring,
Which by a vision sent to her from heaven
Ordained is to raise this tedious siege,
And drive the English forth the bounds of France.
聖処女をここにIはおつれしました、Cは天命をうけてここの包囲を解くように任じられたのです、そしてイングランドをフランスから追い出すでしょう
The spirit of deep prophecy she hath,
Exceeding the nine sibyls（巫女） of old Rome:
古代ローマの１０人の巫女（古代ローマでは本当は巫女は１０人であったとされるので９人だと１人足りない、何の狙いか間違いか）を合わせたよりも深い幻視力を持っています。
What's past and what's to come she can descry.
何が過去で起こるか、何がミライにやってくるか、Cは描くことが出来ます
Speak, shall I call her in? Believe my words,
For they are certain and unfallible.
言っていれば（たぶんついたのでしょう）、Cを呼びますか？Iのコトバを信じて下さい、（予言は）確かで、間違いないものです
CHARLES.
Go, call her in. [Exit Bastard.]
行け、Cを連れて来い
But first, to try her skill,
Reignier, stand thou as Dauphin in my place;
しかし最初にCを試そうじゃないか、レニエ、THOUはDAとしてIの場所に立て
Question her proudly; let thy looks be stern:
Cに尊厳を持って尋ねろ、THYが頑固にみえるように
By this means shall we sound what skill she hath.
これによってCのスキルがわかるはずだ

乙女ジョアンをツレて私生子が再登場
REIGNIER.
Fair maid, is 't thou wilt do these wondrous feats（芸当）?
品のある処女よ、THOUがそのような不思議な御業を行うというのか？
PUCELLE.
Reignier is 't thou that thinkest to beguile me?
レニエよ、THOUがIを騙せるとでも思うのか？
Where is the Dauphin? Come, come from behind;
DAはどこにいる、そうだここへこい
I know thee well, though never seen before.
IはTHEEをよく知っている、今までに会ったことはないが
Be not amazed, there's nothing hid from me.
驚くな、Iは何も隠し立てはしない
In private will I talk with thee apart.
二人で話したいことがあるんだ
Stand back, you lords, and give us leave awhile.
引け、ロードたち、Usを二人きりにしろ
REIGNIER.
She takes upon her bravely at first dash.
最初の一歩からCは勇気を込めていったな
PUCELLE.
Dauphin, I am by birth a shepherd's daughter,
My wit untrain'd in any kind of art.
DAよIは羊飼いの娘で機知のあるしゃべりかたとは無縁だ
Heaven and our Lady gracious hath it pleased
To shine on my contemptible（軽蔑スべき） estate:
天と聖母の慈悲はIのような軽蔑スべき生まれの者にも光を与えたまえた
Lo, whilst I waited on my tender lambs
従順な羊を待っていた時
And to sun's parching（カラカラにする） heat display'd my cheeks,
太陽の光がIの頬をカラカラにしていた時
God's mother deigned（もったいなくも） to appear to me,
And in a vision full of majesty
聖母がIにあらわれてすべてを壮大なビジョンで見せてくれた
Will'd me to leave my base vocation（仕事、お召）,
And free my country from calamity（災難）:
Iを悪い仕事から解放して、Iの国を災難から救えと・・
Her aid she promised and assured success:
In complete glory she reveal'd herself;
Her助けは成功を約束してくれた。まったき栄光の中でCは姿を表したのだった
And, whereas I was black and swart(黒ずむ、黒人みたいになる） before,
With those clear rays which she infused on me
That beauty am I bless'd with which you may see.
そしてIは以前は黒んぼのようなザマだったが、マリア様の神々しい光を浴びて、このように美しく祝福された姿になったのだ、Uも見てわかるように
Ask me what question thou canst possible,
And I will answer unpremeditated（un+計画を立てる、時間をかける）:
THOUが可能な質問ならなんでもしろ、すぐに答えてやろう

Iの勇気を見たくば戦闘で見よ、そのつもりがあるなら、THOUはIのそれが性別を超越したものと知るだろう
Resolve（解決する re-(完全に）の意） on this, thou shalt be fortunate,
If thou receive me for thy warlike mate.
これを決心すればTHOUは幸運だろう、つまりIを戦争のお供として受け入れれば
CHARLES.
Thou hast astonish'd me with thy high terms;
THOUはMEを気高いコトバで驚かせるね
Only this proof I 'll of thy valour（武勇） make,
In single combat thou shalt buckle（？バックルを繋いだ決闘様式？ともかく一騎打ちのスラングのようです） with me,
And if thou vanquishest, thy words are true;
Otherwise I renounce（re- 離れて -nounce報告する＝伝えない、放棄する） all confidence.
Iとのバックル戦の戦いをするのだ、それがTHYの勇気を示す唯一の方法だ。それでTHOUが打ち負かしたなら、THYのコトバは真実だ、そうでなければすべてのことを放棄する。
PUCELLE.
I am prepared: here is my keen-edg'd sword,
Deck'd（～で飾られている） with five flower-de-luces on each side,
準備はできている、これがIの鋭い切っ先のソードだ、両面が（フランス王家の）ユリも紋章５つで飾られている。
The which at Touraine, in Saint Katharine's church-yard（囲い地）,
Out of a great deal of old iron I chose forth.
トゥーレインのサンキャサリンの敷地から、くず鉄の山の中から引き抜いたんだ
CHARLES.
Then come, o' God's name; I fear no woman.
ならばこい、神に誓ってIはオンナなど恐れない
PUCELLE.
And while I live, I 'll ne'er fly from a man.
Iが生きているうちは、オトコから逃げることはない
Here they fight, and Joan La Pucelle overcomes.
斬撃シーン、乙女ジョアンが打ち負かす。
CHARLES.
Stay, stay thy hands; thou art an Amazon（アマゾネス ギリシャ神話の伝説的女性戦士集団,ヴェルギリウスのアエネーイスに出てくるカミラなどが有名、通販会社ではない）
And fightest with the sword of Deborah（旧約 士師記に出てくるオンナ預言者、おそらく最も古い記録の残る女の戦士、デボラーとはヘブライ語でハチ、はちみつの意味）.
待て待て！THOUはアマゾネスか！デボラーのようにソードで戦う
PUCELLE.
Christ's Mother helps me, else I were too weak.
聖母が助けてくれたのだ、そうでなければIは弱すぎるくらいだ
CHARLES.
Whoe'er helps thee, 'tis thou that must help me:
誰がTHEEをたすけてるかはしらないが、THOUがIを助けてくれることは確かだ
Impatiently I burn with thy desire;
THYの願いに、Iは焼きつくされそうだ
My heart and hands thou hast at once subdued（征服する）.
Iのココロと両手は一気にTHOUに征服されてしまった
Excellent Pucelle, if thy name be so,
Let me thy servant and not sovereign be:
'Tis the French Dauphin sueth（嘆願する、告白する） to thee thus.
素晴らしい、乙女よ、もしTHYの名がそうならば、IをTHYの奴隷にしてくれ、Iが支配するのではなく、こうしてフランスのDAUPHINEがTHEEに嘆願しているのだ
PUCELLE.
I must not yield to any rites（儀式、典礼） of love,
For my profession's sacred from above:
Iはどんな愛の儀式にも負けてはいけないの、Iの聖なる仕事はあらゆるものよりも優先されるから
When I have chased all thy foes from hence,
Then will I think upon a recompense.
ここにいるTHYの敵をすべて追い払った時には
その代償として安易を受け取ろうか考えます
CHARLES.
Meantime look gracious on thy prostrate（ひれ伏す） thrall（奴隷状態で）
そのあいだはこのひれ伏した奴隷を優しい眼差しで見て下さい.
